Art and DT

Art & Design Technology are extremely popular subjects at Culford. Culford’s Art Department offers pupils the chance to study traditional artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting and sculpture alongside more modern creative arts such as textiles, photography and 3D design.  Our passionate team of teachers under the expert leadership of Brenda Hunt and Ian Devlin ensure that all Culford pupils have the opportunity to express and develop their artistic talents.

Art Facilities at Culford

The facilities in Culford’s Art Department are outstanding. The Art Department has its own Foundation Gallery where students can display their work in regular exhibitions.  The Foundation Gallery also plays host to exhibitions from Royal Academy Schools graduates and other visiting artists, many of whom lead the children in specialist creative workshops.

Award-Winning Artists

In recent years the fruits of Culford’s artistic endeavour have been quite exceptional.  In 2014 Culford’s Harry Reidy scooped the prestigious Saatchi Gallery/Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools for his wonderful A-level sculpture. Such is the talent of those taking art at Culford that every year a number of pupils leave us to further their studies at prestigious art colleges including Central St MartinsChelsea School of Art, Falmouth and Leeds just to name a few.

Design Technology at Culford

Design and Technology at Culford enables pupils to design and construct imaginative solutions to real needs and problems. They have the opportunity to combine a wide range of resistant materials with mechanical and electrical systems in order to fully develop their ideas. The facilities include a design studio, a systems room and a modern multi-material workshop. Traditional tools and processes combine seamlessly with the use of CAD software and a range of modern equipment including a 3D printer and laser cutter. Pupils are encouraged to be ambitious and creative as they produce high quality outcomes.

Culford’s Design and Technology students annually produce some exciting products in their GCSE and A Level studies and many go on to study design or engineering at university. Culford was one of the earliest schools to join the Arkwright Scholarship Trust and are very proud of the students that have successfully gained scholarships
