GCSE Courses

Culford School’s curriculum has been designed to allow breadth and balance, as well as a degree of specialism.  As part of this we offer a range of GCSE courses that offer considerable scope for both study and long-term career choices.

In the Lower Fifth (Year 10) and Upper Fifth (Year 11) Culford pupils study a number of GCSE and IGCSE subjects according to their individual interests and needs. Most pupils will study 9 GCSE subjects, although some will study 10 or even 11 if they take additional maths. In general, all pupils take the following core GCSE courses:

  • English and English Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Combined Sciences - separate science subjects can be chosen as optional subjects
  • A choice of at least one language - French or Spanish

Pupils then select to study up to a further three or four optional GCSE subjects from:

  • Art
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Design and Technology
  • Drama
  • Geography
  • History
  • Latin
  • Languages
  • Music
  • Physics
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Studies

In the case of English, Mathematics, Science and Languages, GCSE pupils are set according to their abilities.

IGCSE Courses

Culford now offers selected IGCSE courses.  In Mathematics, high ability pupils can take IGCSE early in the Lower Fifth (Year 10) so that they can study Additional Mathematics in the Upper Fifth (Year 11).

Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE)

In addition to their GCSE studies, all pupils have a weekly period of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE). During these PSHCE sessions, pupils consider topics such as relationships, assertiveness, health, government and finance. There is also a weekly period involving Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PELTS) which covers study skills, self-assessment, organisation, planning and revision. In addition, there is one period of Physical Education and two double games slots together with a whole host of academic enrichment and extra-curricular activities.  Lower Fifth and Upper Fifth pupils also have one period per week in the Chaplaincy centre, with Upper Sixth pupils taking part in themed days.
