Children from PP1 and PP2 have performed a mini-musical in order to help raise funds for the school’s ongoing support of the Good News Orphanage in Sorgin, Malawi.
‘
Brick-by-Brick’ was composed especially for the children, with music by D. StJohn Weyers (Director of Music, Prep School) and words by Nicholas Hopton (Director of Studies, Prep School).
The performances of
Brick-by-Brick were made particularly special by the presence of Samson Phiri, a Malawian who has been invited to study at Culford for the next five months. Samson has been one of several volunteers from the charitable organisation AYISE who have provided outstanding support during Culford’s last three expeditions to Malawi.
The plot introduces children to some of the issues facing Malawi, such as poverty, water shortage and deforestation, as well as the culture, beauty, wildlife and sense of community to be found there. The songs include phrases in Chichewa, one of the local languages.
Situated near the Mozambique border, the Good News Orphanage is home to over 100 children. Visits there have touched the hearts of Culford’s Sixth Formers, who for the past three years have made an annual trip to repair and develop the facilities, provide clothes and equipment, and sponsor children through secondary school.
