Careers Guidance

Our careers guidance programme is designed to support students throughout their time at the School and draws upon the expertise of external agencies as well as the skills and experience of those within Culford. The programme is the responsibility of the Head of Careers but many others are involved in providing support and information: House staff, tutors, subject teachers, Culford parents and alumni, and personnel from external agencies such as Cambridge Occupational Analysts.

The careers guidance programme is evolving to meet pupils’ needs at a time when applying for an ever-broadening range of educational institutions and careers is particularly competitive. We aim to tailor our support to meet each individual’s needs. This necessitates a thorough as well as a flexible programme which has three major strands:

• Helping pupils make informed and sensible decisions about exam course choices and possible career paths;

• Helping pupils develop appropriate skills and work experience;

• Guiding pupils through applications to higher education, further education or employment

The Careers Library, which is situated in the Senior Library, holds current information about a wide range of career areas, gap opportunities, higher education, funding and courses. It includes many leaflets, booklets, and brochures, and a good stock of books related to careers and issues you may face on leaving school. New editions of seminal careers literature are ordered annually. A number of careers-related magazines are available for browsing. Posters advertising careers seminars and useful websites are also displayed here.
