Pastoral Care

Excellent pastoral care, in the context of a safe, caring and vibrant community is at the heart of school life. It is not enough for pupils to be busy, challenged and successful; they must also be happy. Without happiness it is difficult to achieve the many other things that education brings.

Whether as a day pupil or a boarder, each student is supported by a personal tutor as well as their Housemaster or Housemistress. There are five Houses at Culford each catering for boys or girls aged 13 to 18. Three Houses are for boys and two for girls. Two Houses are Day Houses, whilst the others are Boarding Houses with some day pupils:

Cornwallis   Boys' Boarding & Day House   Mr G Reynolds
Edwards      Boys' Boarding & Day  Mr S Arbuthnot
Fitzgerald   Girls' Day House  Mrs C Byrne
Jocelyn           Girls' Boarding & Day            Mrs B Recknell
Robson  Boys' Day House  Mr G Draper

Day and boarding pupils are well integrated in all areas of school life and pupils mix through the year groups and across the Houses. Each House provides for boys or girls aged from 13 to 18 years, with older pupils taking some responsibility for the day-to-day running of the House.

All the Houses aim to create a family atmosphere in which each child will be encouraged to become independent, taking on more responsibility for himself/herself and others in readiness for life at university and beyond.
