Life in the Sixth Form
Sixth Form life is different. You will have more freedom than you have experienced in your school career so far. You will need to be self-disciplined to get the work-life balance right but it will be well worth it.
The range of opportunities available to you at Culford, both inside and outside the classroom, is huge. Choosing when and where to concentrate your efforts will be a key part of your development as a young adult. Your teachers, personal tutor, Housemaster/Housemistress are here to guide and support you along the way.
There is a wide variety of social events on offer – many of them will be ones that you organise yourself – and you will get to know fellow pupils very well. The Sixth Form Centre is a key meeting place where you can relax with your friends and share the day’s events and students run their own Sixth Form Society which organises evening events such as the Highland Ball, the annual Fashion Show and other socials like the Halloween Party. You will make friends here that you keep for the rest of your life.
So, while we expect you to work hard, we also fully expect you to play hard too!
Our Sixth Form Enrichment Programme is an exciting and diverse programme which starts with Freshers' Week as soon as you arrive in September. Once you have settled in, met the rest of the year group and enjoyed a sixth form social evening, a Leadership training day is followed by an activity challenge in the Peak District. Here you will spend three days trying a host of activities from canoeing and rock climbing through to raft building and abseiling.
The programme continues on your return to Culford with a variety of enrichment afternoons, seminars and conferences across the year covering: presentation skills; self esteem; managing relationships; maintaining mental and physical health; assertiveness training and meditation. Finally, at the end of the Lower Sixth, in the summer a group of students have the opportunity to plan and execute an overseas expedition to Malawi, including a significant element of community and charity work.
Leadership Roles
There are plenty of leadership opportunities including prefectship, running clubs and societies, acting as a tour guide for prospective parents and pupils, participating in School Council, the CCF and pupil mentoring. We expect you to contribute to the life of the school, its success and your own through positive leadership.
