Boarding in Sixth Form

Boarding is a popular choice in the Sixth Form at Culford and a number of day pupils decide to board in their last two years. Most see it as a great way to prepare for the transition from school to University; it enables you to become more independent in a safe, secure and caring environment. Students develop their organisational skills, together with a sense of responsibility both for themselves and for others. The Sixth Form Enrichment Programme offers opportunities to learn to cook on a dedicated course; students learn to drive; and tailored courses on looking after your finances, safety, personal care and healthy living all offer the chance to improve your skills for life after school.

The majority of boarders at Culford are full boarders, staying at school for the whole week, although pupils may, of course, go home or stay with friends at the weekend, after Saturday morning school and any sporting or other commitments. Many choose to stay; we offer an exciting programme of weekend activities including trips to the multiplex cinema, karting, bowling and meals out, as well as special outings, such as trips to the snow dome, to London or to the theatre.

Culford offers flexible arrangements for other boarders where possible: weekly and occasional boarding may be provided, as long as space is available. We do not have enforced exeat weekends; students stay at school throughout the term, going home at the weekend or to stay with friends, only when they or their parents wish them to.

Each House has one or more common rooms to relax in with a television, table tennis and pool tables as well as modern kitchen facilities, where pupils can make a drink or snack in the evenings and at weekends. In the Lower Sixth most will share in a double room; in your final year of Sixth Form, each has their own study bedroom. All the Houses have Internet access.

Housemasters and Housemistresses take a strong interest in the personal development of all those in their House, keeping in close touch with parents. They are supported by a team of tutors who regularly meet individual students to advise on academic progress and to provide guidance in every aspect of their lives. Each House also has a matron and a resident Assistant to the Housemaster or Housemistress. All pupils, both day and boarding, enjoy a high level of individual support in each of the Culford Houses.
