For students with a passion for horses and ambition to pursue careers in racing, equine care, or related fields, combining tradition, expertise, and opportunity within one of Britain’s most iconic sporting sectors.

The Programme

Delivered in partnership with the historic home of racing, this pathway offers a recognised qualification and a clear route into the industry. 

Pupils will attend one day at the British Racing School per week. They will experience classroom-based learning and extensive practical training, including the theoretical foundations and practical skills required to work safely and effectively within the racing industry.

The Programme includes:

  • Lectures covering theoretical aspects of horseracing and racehorse management
  • Practical sessions working directly with thoroughbred racehorses
  • Riding racehorses at various paces across a range of professional training facilities
  • Fitness and conditioning sessions specific to race riding

Facilities and Resources

Training will be delivered at the British Racing School, a purpose built training centre on the outskirts of Newmarket and the headquarters of British horseracing. With extensive grounds and state of the art equipment it’s the premier training facility in the country with resources to ensure pupils train in an authentic, industry-standard environment.

Facilities Include:

  • A 120-acre training site
  • Approximately 65 racehorses
  • Indoor and outdoor Maneges
  • All-weather gallops
  • Racehorse simulators
  • Video analysis and review facilities

 

Year One

Level 1 Diploma in Racehorse Care

  • Feeding and watering horses
  • Grooming and presentation
  • Understanding racehorse behaviour
  • Use, fitting, and maintenance of tack
  • Stable management practices
  • Racehorse health and welfare
  • Riding and exercising racehorses

Year Two

Advanced Riding Pathway


In Year Two, pupils will progress to more advanced riding and horsemanship.


Training will be incorporated into British Racing School (BRS) riding
programmes and streamed according to individual ability and progression.

 

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Fulfil the academic entry requirements for Culford Sixth Form.
  • Demonstrate prior riding experience, assessed through practical skills evaluation.
  • Meet physiological and fitness requirements necessary for participation in the programme.

Progression

Graduates can progress to horseracing employment, a structured gap year, or further study like the BSc (Hons) Horseracing Industry degree. International travel opportunities within global racing networks may also be available.
